LOCAL ATTRACTIONS:
Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbor. The British built this home base for their fleet during the Napoleonic Wars, fortunate to already have possession of one of the best naturally-protected harbors in the Caribbean. The dockyard is partially restored to its 17th century glory with colonial naval buildings nestled protectively inside stone fortress walls. English Harbor provided sanctuary from both hurricanes and marauding pirates, both roaming the unpredictable Caribbean waters. There is a small fee (to cover basic upkeep and maintenance) for admission to the dockyards and restored Fort Barclay which is situated at the entrance to the harbor.
ACCESS TO BEACH:
Available to the general public with easy access through the hotel. (Note: you can park your own vehicle in the hotel lot) although watersports and beach chairs are reserved for hotel guests only.
QUALITY OF BEACH:
A long beach of brilliant golden sand suitable for sunbathing, swimming and watersports.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
If you ask directions to Turner's Beach, the locals may seem puzzled; most Antigauns know this simply as 'Blue Heron Beach'.
